El Paso drives differently than the rest of Texas. Plenty of people here cross the bridge every week, plenty commute into New Mexico, and the state's 30/60/25 minimum hasn't kept pace with what a vehicle costs to replace. We go through your policy line by line and tell you plainly where you're exposed — in English or Spanish, in person if you want.
Auto Coverage We Offer
Not every auto policy is built the same. We assemble yours from these coverages — so you're protected without paying for things you don't need.
If you rent, ask us to quote renters alongside your auto. In El Paso, renters coverage often costs less per month than the multi-policy discount it unlocks — so the second policy can effectively pay for itself, and everything you own is covered on top of that.
Texas Auto Insurance Requirements
Texas is an at-fault state — whoever causes the crash is responsible for the damage. The law sets liability minimums and requires insurers to offer you two more coverages that you can only turn down in writing. Here's the whole picture:
| Coverage Type | Texas Requires | Our Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Bodily Injury Liability (per person) | $30,000 | $100,000+ |
| Bodily Injury Liability (per accident) | $60,000 | $300,000+ |
| Property Damage Liability | $25,000 | $100,000+ |
| Personal Injury Protection (PIP) | $2,500 offered — reject in writing | Keep it. Raise it. |
| Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist | Offered — reject in writing | Match your liability limits |
| New Mexico minimum (for comparison) | 25/50/10 | Same as above |
Look closely at the property damage line. $25,000 is the legal floor, and plenty of new vehicles on I-10 cost well past it. A three-car chain reaction on the Border Highway can blow through the state minimum before anyone is even injured — and everything above it comes out of your pocket, or out of a judgment against you. Higher limits cost far less than most people assume.
Driving into Juárez — What Your U.S. Policy Doesn't Do
This is the most common gap we find in El Paso, and almost nobody knows they have it until it's too late to fix. Mexico does not recognize a U.S. auto liability policy. Not for a day trip, not for a quick run across the bridge, not because you've done it a hundred times without a problem.
My U.S. policy alone
Doesn't satisfy Mexican law
- Liability issued in the U.S. isn't recognized by Mexican authorities
- Some policies extend physical damage a limited distance past the border — that is not the same as liability, and the two get confused constantly
- After an accident, the vehicle can be impounded and you can be held until fault and damages are settled
- "I'm just going to the dentist" doesn't change any of this
A Mexico tourist auto policy
Bought by the trip or by the year
- Liability issued by a Mexican insurer — which is what the law actually requires
- Available per-day, per-trip, or annually if you cross regularly
- Usually includes legal assistance and bail bond — the part that matters most in the moment
- Costs a great deal less than most people expect
If you cross at all — for work, for family, for an appointment — call us at (915) 265-2300 before the trip. It takes a few minutes to sort out in advance and it cannot be sorted out from the other side of the bridge.
What Drives Auto Rates in El Paso
El Paso generally sits below the Texas statewide average — the metro doesn't take the hail and windstorm losses that drive pricing in DFW or along the Gulf. But several local factors still move your number:
- Where you park it: Rates vary noticeably between ZIP codes inside El Paso County — the Westside, the Lower Valley and the far East side don't price the same.
- Uninsured drivers: Texas has a persistent uninsured-driver problem, and that pushes pricing up for everyone. It's also exactly why UM/UIM exists.
- Desert weather: Spring dust storms and late-summer monsoon hail generate real comprehensive claims here — cracked windshields and sandblasted paint more than anything dramatic.
- Repair costs: Parts and labor have outpaced general inflation since 2020, and a modern bumper packed with sensors and cameras costs multiples of what the same repair cost a decade ago.
- Your record and your credit: Texas permits credit-based insurance scoring, and it moves premiums more than most drivers expect.
Most of that you can't control. What you can control is whether the policy is built correctly and whether you're getting every discount you qualify for — and that part is our job.

Ways to Lower Your Auto Premium
We go looking for every discount you qualify for rather than waiting to be asked. These are the ones that pay off most for El Paso drivers:
Bundle Auto with Renters or Home
Adding a renters or homeowners policy alongside your auto is usually the single biggest lever available, and renters coverage in El Paso often costs less per month than the discount it unlocks. Ask us to run both numbers together.
Federal Employee Discount
GEICO was built for government employees and still has a discount for them. In a city with Fort Bliss, CBP, and a large federal workforce, this is the one most often left on the table. Tell us where you work.
Military Discount
Active duty, Guard, Reserve and veterans can qualify, and there is a separate emergency deployment discount for service members deployed to an imminent danger pay area.
Put Every Vehicle on One Policy
Multi-vehicle pricing is meaningful, and it also makes your uninsured motorist coverage easier to structure correctly across the household.
Good Student Discount
A full-time student on your policy with a B average or better can take a real bite out of the young driver surcharge — often the difference between a teen being affordable to insure and not.
Raise Your Deductible
Moving collision from $500 to $1,000 lowers the premium noticeably. Only do it if you can absorb the higher number the day something happens.
Anti-Theft and Safety Equipment
Factory alarms, immobilizers, GPS tracking, air bags and daytime running lamps can each qualify. So can simply wearing a seat belt on some policies.
Defensive Driving Course
A state-approved driver safety course can qualify for a discount and, separately, can keep an eligible ticket off your record. Ask us which applies to your situation before you sign up for one.
Frequently Asked Questions — El Paso Auto Insurance
Texas requires 30/60/25 liability — $30,000 bodily injury per person, $60,000 per accident, and $25,000 property damage. Insurers must also offer Personal Injury Protection of at least $2,500 and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage; you can decline either, but only in writing. Driving without proof of financial responsibility brings a fine that escalates on a second offense, plus an annual surcharge on your license. We make sure you clear the minimum, then usually recommend going well past it.
No. Mexico does not recognize a standard U.S. auto liability policy, and Mexican law requires liability coverage issued by a Mexican insurer. Without it, an accident can mean your vehicle is impounded and you are held until fault and damages get sorted out. Some U.S. policies extend physical damage coverage a limited distance past the border — that is not the same thing as the liability Mexico requires, and people confuse the two constantly. If you cross the bridge at all, even occasionally, call us before the next trip.
El Paso generally runs below the Texas statewide average — the metro sees far less hail and wind than DFW or the Gulf Coast, and that shows up in pricing. Full coverage often lands somewhere in the range of $1,500–$2,100 a year, but your ZIP, vehicle, record, credit and chosen limits move that a lot. Minimum-limits coverage costs much less and leaves much more exposed. The only real answer is to run your actual numbers.
Texas requires 30/60/25; New Mexico requires 25/50/10 — lower on every line, and dramatically lower on property damage. Your policy is built around where the vehicle is garaged, but it needs to make sense for where it actually drives. If you commute to Santa Teresa or Las Cruces, or you keep a vehicle on both sides of the line, tell us — we're licensed in both states and it changes how we structure the policy.
Because it is the coverage that pays when the other driver cannot. Texas has a persistent uninsured-driver problem, and your liability coverage does nothing for you in that situation — it protects the other person. UM/UIM is what covers your injuries and your vehicle when someone with no policy runs a light. Texas insurers have to offer it and you can only reject it in writing, which is exactly why so many people have rejected it without remembering they did.
The common ones: multi-vehicle, multi-policy, good driver, good student, anti-theft equipment, air bags, seat belt use, new vehicle. GEICO also has a federal employee discount and a military discount covering active duty, Guard, Reserve and veterans — in an El Paso and Fort Bliss household those are frequently missed. DriveEasy, the usage-based program, can add more if you drive safely or don't drive much. We go through the whole list rather than waiting for you to ask.
Often the same day. If you're at a dealership and they need proof of insurance before you drive off the lot, call the office directly at (915) 265-2300 — that's the fastest path, faster than any online form. We're open Monday through Saturday, 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM, and we can usually get an ID card to your phone before you finish the paperwork.
